Simulation of Self-affirmation Phenomena in Cognitive Dissonance

چکیده
The consonance constraint-satisfaction model, which has simulated the major paradigms of classical cognitive dissonance theory, is here extended to deal with more contemp orary findings concerning self-affirmation phenomena in dissonance reduction. The key addition to the model, which has also figured in recent simulations of arousal phenomena, is to lessen activity level within the neural network model in self-affirmation conditions. These and other simu lations continue to show that dissonance phenomena can be explained in terms of constraint satisfa ction.

On the cultural guises of cognitive dissonance: the case of easterners and westerners.
Cognitive dissonance and effects of self-affirmation on dissonance arousal were examined cross-culturally. In Studies 1 and 2, European Canadians justified their choices more when they made them for themselves, whereas Asian Canadians (Study 1) or Japanese (Study 2) justified their choices more when they made them for a friend. In Study 3, an interdependent self-affirmation reduced dissonance f...
متن کاملCognitive Dissonance Theory After 50 Years of Development
Research and theoretical developments on the theory of cognitive dissonance are reviewed. After considering the self-consistency, self-affirmation, and aversive consequences revisions, the authors review research that has challenged each of the revisions and that supports the original version of the theory. Then, the authors review the action-based model of dissonance, which accepts the origina...
متن کاملSelf-affirmation versus self-consistency: a comparison of two competing self-theories of dissonance phenomena ¬リニ
High or low self-esteem individuals participated in a role-playing paradigm in which a friend stood them up for a dinner date. The participants received either a good explanation from the friend for the missed date (sufficient justification) or a poor explanation (insufficient justification). As predicted by self-affirmation theory (Steele, 1988), but not self-consistency theory (Aronson, 1999)...
متن کاملThe emotional and attitudinal consequences of religious hypocrisy: experimental evidence using a cognitive dissonance paradigm.
We explored the emotional and attitudinal consequences of personal attitude-behavior discrepancies using a religious version of the hypocrisy paradigm. We induced cognitive dissonance in participants (n = 206) by making them feel hypocritical for advocating certain religious behaviors that they had not recently engaged in to their own satisfaction. In Experiment 1, this resulted in higher level...
متن کاملA Self-Standards Model of Cognitive Dissonance
This article presents a new model for understanding the role of the self in cognitive dissonance processes. We focus on the controversies among three major theories of how cognitions about the self mediate dissonance processes: Self-consistency (Aronson, 1992), Self-affirmation (Steele, 1988), and the New Look perspective (Cooper & Fazio, 1984). It is argued that each of these contemporary revi...
